RULES AND PARTICIPATION GUIDELINES
PURPOSE
The Colibri Instrumental Competition gives young musicians an opportunity to perform before a live audience and professional jury, gain stage experience, build confidence, and continue developing as musicians.
Practice builds technique. Performance builds musicians.
COMPETITION FORMAT
The competition is held in one live round at:
Fiesta Hall at Plummer Park
7377 Santa Monica Blvd.
West Hollywood, CA 90046
The event is open to the public.
AGE GROUPS
- Up to 8 years
- 9–11 years
- 12–14 years
- 15–18 years
Age is determined as of the competition date.
COMPETITION CATEGORIES
- Piano
- String Instruments
Solo performers and duos are welcome.
REPERTOIRE
Each participant must prepare two contrasting selections from different musical periods or styles, such as Baroque, Classical, Romantic, or Contemporary.
Solo repertoire must be performed from memory.
Selections should be appropriate for the participant’s age and level of musical preparation.
PERFORMANCE TIME LIMITS
Maximum total time for both selections:
- Up to 8: 5 minutes
- 9–11: 7 minutes
- 12–14: 10 minutes
- 15–18: 12 minutes
Participants are not required to use the full allotted time.
PREPARATORY CATEGORY
The Preparatory Category is available for beginning solo students with approximately 1 to 1½ years of formal instrumental study, regardless of age.
Repertoire should be appropriate to the participant’s current level.

Duo: $50 per participant
Includes two selections.
Preparatory Solo: $50
All registration fees are non-refundable.
JURY
Participants are evaluated by experienced music professionals and educators.
Evaluation may include:
- Technical preparation
- Accuracy and rhythm
- Tone quality
- Musical expression
- Interpretation
- Stage presence
- Overall artistic impression
The participant’s age and level of musical development are taken into consideration.
The jury’s decisions are final.
